Lake Assal

Located at the western end of the Gulf of Tadjoura and at the top of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Assal is a crater lake. Situated some 155 metres below sea level, it is the lowest point in Africa and the third lowest depression on Earth after the Dead Sea and Sea of Galilee There is no outflow from the lake and due to high evaporation, the salinity level of its waters is ten times that of the sea.

The oval shape lake consists of two distinct parts –a 54-square kilometre high saline brine area and a 68-square kilometre crystallised salt surface that extends to a depth of more than 60 metres. The extraction of salt from Lake Assal’s salt bank by the Afar nomad tribes of camel drivers established the ancient caravan routes and salt was also a source of wealth for local tribes. After leaving Djibouti City you’ll drive into the desert studded with small mountainous ranges. Tiny settlements, houses, shacks, Bedouin tents and shepherds herding their goats alongside the road give a fascinating glimpse into the simplistic lifestyle of the locals.

Near the end of the journey the landscape changes and it is a wonderful experience as you first spy Lake Assal shimmering in the distance. As you get closer still the colours of the lake are simply stunning. Salt creates an illusion of white sand that could easily be mistaken for a Caribbean beach – minus the palm trees. Stop by the edge of the lake on a long stretch of shore completely covered in salt. There are no houses, no trees and no facilities for miles – just a vast salt plain. It is here you can enjoy your packed lunch and wander at leisure through what is a truly extraordinary landscape.
